EC Sustainable collects and drops clean-up clothing to St Vincent de Paul

A large percentage of clean-up material is recyclable or reusable, while almost all of the clean-up collected by Council contractors is disposed of in landfill. Resource recovery rates are still low, despite some separated collections for metal, mattresses and green waste as well as events such as garage sales, e-waste days and chemical clean-outs .

Clean-up waste can also be unsightly on the kerbside, and booking procedures may not be followed by residents. There is an opportunity to enhance the service.

Report and strategy
EC Sustainable conducts clean-up audits/surveys and reporting to assist Council with their data needs to plan improved resource recovery, revise strategy and maximise service efficiency.

Getting on with recovery
As well as reporting on the current state of play, our staff also conduct niche recovery services to enhance recycling prior to collection of the residual for disposal.

In a recent trial, in one morning, two EC Sustainable staff collected 10 cubic metres of recyclable or reusable items weighing approximately 1 tonne. These items were dropped to recycling centres and charities such as St Vincent de Paul.

Items included cardboard, clothing, e-waste, furniture, metal and bric-a-brac.
