EC Sustainable was engaged by Hawkesbury City Council to conduct a comprehensive domestic waste audit. The bins of about 220 randomly selected households were surveyed and results were reported in aggregate only.

Council has published the results as a summary for the benefit of their community. Overall, contamination and waste generation rates have decreased since the last audit in 2011:

  • Presence of garden organics has reduced from 20% to 12% in garbage bins. Households generate 30% less waste.
  • The contamination rate in recycling bins has fallen from 10.8% to 9%.

More details about this audit are available in this article.
