Litter & Public Place Recycling
EC Sustainable assists clients to reduce litter and waste in public places as well as provide advice to enhance the overall standards, maintenance and sustainability of public places.
Trained EC Sustainable consultants deliver litter counts, litter source analyses, site assessments, PPR waste and recycling compositional assessments as well as social research surveys to enable change.
Projects can include the following elements:
- Random sampling and confidence interval analyses.
- Face to face surveying to gauge the public opinion on litter and initiatives to improve their public spaces.
- Sample frames including consideration of collection and assessment times, clean-up times, new and old litter, events and weather conditions.
- Sorting for composition assessments including classifying litter items by count, by volume, by weight, by brand and by source.
- Benchmark ratings and trend analysis.
- Advice on waste and recycling bin and cigarette butt system options and improvement strategies.
EC Sustainable has worked with local and state government groups to implement a range of project methods such as:
- CCAT (Clean Communities Assessment Tool).*
- Detailed quadrant sampling methods at localised GIS points for weight and number of items.
- Long distance bulky litter count surveys such as along freeways.
- Physical public place waste and recycling bin sorting.
- Disposal observations.
- Public and stakeholder attitudes and surveys.
* The Clean Communities Assessment Tool is an initiative of Rob Curnow and Karen Spehr, Community Change. The original CCAT Methodology was designed in 2003.
